I have a passion for helping others realize the potential that lies within them and inspiring them to develop this potential. Through the years I have seen many talented people that were unable to advance in their fields and experience limited performance due to poor interpersonal skills. This barrier can keep us from being the person we were created to be and experiencing the fulfilling life we were created to have.
There are over 7 billion people that inhabit planet earth and each one can be uniquely identified by their fingerprints, DNA, retina, voice pattern, etc. This fact alone tells us that our Creator uniquely created each of us for a purpose that only we can fulfill. The Apostle Paul states this in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
When we embrace this reality, we realize that each of us has a unique, personal brand that we project to the world each day. So what would others say about our personal brand?
Our Personal Brand
Just as products and companies brand, so do people. We teach people every day how to treat us and build a personal brand that reflects the character, beliefs, behaviors, and reputation that others experience when they encounter us.
When I speak to groups around the country, I use the example of Godiva chocolate versus Hershey chocolate. Both are good chocolate, but Godiva is approximately 10 times more expensive than Hershey. So, the question becomes, what causes someone to pay 10 times more for one product over the other? The answer is branding. The difference in packaging, presentation, reputation, perceived value, etc. sets one product over another. These same principles apply to our personal brand.
The way we dress, communicate, the language we use, our behavior, how we invest our time all convey our attitudes and beliefs that reflect our personal brand to the world each day.
If we agree that each of us reflect a personal brand and understand it can be our distinct competitive advantage, the next question should be what does my personal brand reflect? The Apostle Paul provides my favorite verse and a great answer in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” We were created to be authentic to our unique creation and to reflect the excellence of our Creator. However, many do not strive for excellence because it is perceived as perfection and we know human beings are not perfect. The difference between excellence and perfection is the grace to accept the imperfections in my life and the wisdom to learn and grow from them. This enables me to lead by example through words and actions so I can contribute to a better world.
Elevating the Christian Brand
Each day we have the opportunity to reflect our personal brand with excellence as we respect ourselves first, then those we encounter. When we take the characteristics of grace, love, kindness, and excellence exemplified by Jesus and walk them out as we were created to do, we elevate the Christian brand and glorify our Heavenly Father.
I encourage you today to be the best, unique you, elevated to the level of excellence you were created to display.
