Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained.
Proverbs 29:18 (NASB)
Most of us have an idea of what we want to accomplish this year. It might be connected to financial gain or losing weight, reading more or drinking less. In fact, by the end of January, we will all likely be chin deep in our new disciplined mindset, completing tasks that will lead us to our annual personal goal.
Unfortunately, also true for most of us, our vision of success often does not include God.
We work hard. We push ourselves. We reach new milestones. And yet, as we climb, we don’t realize our efforts, without Him, are in vain.
Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it
Psalm 127:1 (NASB)
This is the same truth found in Proverbs 29:18, where “vision” specifically refers to Godly teaching and spiritual guidance. Both passages represent how the word of the Lord is scarce in our plans. When there is no spiritual guidance, sure, we can build, but ultimately it all ends in rebellion, idleness or play.
There is nothing more beautiful in this life than to work with all our hearts as if working for the Lord. When our plans are God-focused, they will have eternal outcomes. We will make a difference for those around us.
I was recently sent a video link of the post-game interview with Dabo Swinney, the head coach for Clemson University, (and no, I didn’t even watch the game.) After winning the college championship he was in full celebration. An ESPN reporter made a statement then asked him question: “There are few coaches in any sport who show more joy than you do. How do you describe the joy in this moment?”
Dabo’s answer showed the source for his vision and labor. He said, “For me, personally, joy comes from focusing on Jesus, others and yourself.”
We have before us a year full of potential to glorify God and experience true success. May this be a year where our vision is to glorify God and our plans are built on His foundation.
