Happy New Year from the C3 community, we wish each you a prosperous New Year! The C3 theme for the month of January is “Entering the New Year.” Some years we enter the new year weary from a difficult previous year, just glad to put the year behind us and move into a new year. Other years we enter from a good year with great anticipation of the wonderful year ahead. Whatever your state of mind entering this new year, let us press on to the great things our Heavenly Father has prepared for us in 2019. As the Apostle Paul stated, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
Instead of focusing on a list of resolutions that will most likely be broken before February arrives, lets focus on developing an intentional lifestyle that is exemplified by Jesus in Luke 2:52, “Jesus grew in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and man.” This verse reflects an intentional lifestyle that results in a healthy mental, physical, spiritual, and relational life that can produce abundant fruit throughout the year.
Growing in Wisdom
When I think about growing in wisdom, I am reminded of the story of Solomon found in 2 Chronicles 1:7-15, “That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” Solomon answered God, “You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me king in his place. Now, Lord God, let your promise to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth. Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?” God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth, possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honor, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.”
Solomon could have asked for anything and his heart’s desire was to receive wisdom, so because he asked for wisdom, he received wisdom, wealth, possessions, and honor. The pursuit of wisdom is not a passive pursuit, but one we should request from God and pursue throughout the year.
Developing a Healthy Lifestyle
Many of us struggle with the consistent discipline of developing a healthy lifestyle. We have dropped the pounds or developed the muscle only to have the pounds return and the muscle go away when we get off our routine. The key to success in this area is to develop routines that are integrated into a healthy lifestyle. Taking care of the body God has blessed us with is an act of stewardship that will pay great dividends for years to come. Developing a healthy lifestyle of exercise, proper nutrition, hydration, rest, and other healthy habits are not always easy, but will enhance our brain function, produce higher energy levels, and increase our relational confidence as we steward the body God has provided.
Developing Healthy Relationships
The foundation to growing in wisdom and a healthy lifestyle is relationships, first with God and then those He has placed in our lives. God’s plan has not changed since the beginning of creation; He created human beings in His image to be in relationship with Him and each other. Jesus summed up the law in the following verse found in Mark 12:30-31, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’There is no commandment greater than these.”
In modern day culture, healthy relationships are one of the biggest challenges we face. There are so many distractions that can keep us from having the time to establish healthy relationships, or we create a false sense of relationships through social media. Investing the time to have a growing and prospering relationship with our Heavenly Father provides a foundation by which we can grow healthy relationships with our spouses, children, family, and others God has placed in our circle of influence. When we do this together, each of us play a significant role in realizing the C3 vision, “To mobilize the Christian community for city transformation.”
Looking Forward to 2019
Nine is the number of harvest, and I believe God has been preparing many for the harvest He has prepared for 2019. As I enter this year, I am committed to personally grow in wisdom, develop a healthy lifestyle, and invest in healthy relationships that will contribute to transforming our cities.
I am thankful for each of you and the privilege of taking this journey with you. May the Lord bless you and keep you as you walk out the unique journey God has prepared for you in 2019.
